Alison Mascarenhas
Fused Glass Artist

I grew up in Edinburgh and worked as a dietitian in the NHS for about 20 years in various places in the UK.

When we moved to the Island about 6 years ago, I attended workshops on mosaic and glass fusion and it was then my love of glass began. In time, I would like to run workshops/courses and inspire others to enjoy and make their glass too.

When not making glass, my husband Colin, and I run a small gardening business and a holiday cottage (Strawberry Cottage >>) and we enjoy walking and cycling.
Me and my glass

I live on the lovely Isle of Wight and make fused glass in our home studio in the village of Brighstone in West Wight.

Much of my inspiration for my glass comes from the nature and coastal environment of the island. I love colour and light and glass is the perfect medium for art. The possibilities are endless! I aim to make affordable art so everyone can enjoy a piece in their home.

Fused glass has a technical aspect to it as it is fired in a kiln which is programmed to 800oC for varying times and schedules to create certain effects. I quite like DIY and this is just as well as you have to use, repair and maintain glass saws, grinders etc!

I love the anticipation of opening the kiln to see how items have turned out as each item is unique as no glass fuses exactly the same. The colours therefore may vary very slightly from what you see on the website.
